Fittingness first?: Reasons to withhold belief

Abstract Recent years have seen the rise of fittingness-first views , which take fittingness to be most basic normative feature, in terms other features can explained. This paper poses a serious difficulty for approach by showing that existing accounts cannot plausibly accommodate an important class reasons: reasons not believe proposition. There are two kinds proposition: considerations counterevidence ; and count against believing proposition without indicating it is false. I will argue trouble accommodating latter kind.
